Antibiotics for Use Whilst Travelling

Carnarvon Medical Centre does not routinely prescribe antibiotics for patients to take abroad "just in case" they become unwell during their trip.

National prescribing guidance recommends that antibiotics should only be prescribed when there is a clear clinical indication. Providing antibiotics in advance for potential future illnesses may be inappropriate, can contribute to antibiotic resistance, and may not be the correct treatment for the condition that develops.

If you become unwell whilst travelling, you should seek advice and treatment from a local healthcare provider, pharmacy, urgent care service, or hospital in the country you are visiting. They will be able to assess your symptoms and provide appropriate treatment based on your clinical condition.

Patients travelling with a specific long-term medical condition may occasionally require individual consideration. Any such requests will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by a clinician.

We recommend that all travellers:

• Ensure they have adequate travel insurance.

• Carry a sufficient supply of their regular prescribed medication for the duration of their trip.

• Check any vaccination or travel health requirements well in advance of travel.

• Familiarise themselves with local healthcare arrangements at their destination.
